#117

Cerebus (1988)

Flash (1996)

JLA (2005)

Man of Steel: The Death of Maxima. The Resurrection of Steel. (2001)

New Titans (1995)

New X-Men: My first real exposure to the art of Ethan Van Sciver is from this issue. There were a few random Van Sciver drawn issues before this in other titles and since I never read the Impulse title, I can remember this issue being the one where his artwork stood out to me. At the time I thought he was a Phil Jimenez clone (and by extension a George Perez clone). They have similarities, but eventually the differences win out. (2001)

Nightwing: As the events of Infinite Crisis reach all of the DCU, Dick Grayson proposes to Barbara Gordon. (2006)

Wolverine (1997)

Wonder Woman: Diana’s invisible jet returns! (1997)

X-Factor: This - and his run on Avengers - will always be “my” Steve Epting. (1995)

.

And from the never read/never owned file:

Captain America: The first appearance of the Falcon! (1969)

.

Flash: With the first appearance of Captain Boomerang! (1960)

#235

Captain America: Totally forgot about this issue. It was in my uncle’s collection. I know Faustus was part of this story. As well as the Grand Director. Sal Buscema art (he was everywhere in those days). And the “death” of Sharon Carter I believe. (1979)

Daredevil (1986)

Fantastic Four: Ego the Living Planet! A truly great Kirby creation that screams Marvel Cosmic. (1981)

Justice League of America (1985)

Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes (1978)

X-Men Legacy (2010)

Covers of comics that are (or have been) in my collection at one point or another.

#293

Captain America: The first Captain America comic I ever bought off the rack. I never had issue 292 so I’m assuming 293 is the start of the Red Skull story leading to 300. When people talk about great early-80s Marvel storyarcs, this one is usually left out. While it isn’t necessarily as groundbreaking as Simonson’s Thor run or Frank Miller’s Daredevil run, it certainly has a grand feel to it, leading up to the battle between Cap and the Skull in 300. Worth a backissue hunt at the very least. (1984)

Fantastic Four: Although Byrne wrote and drew this issue, Jerry Ordway did the cover - not that you can tell at first glance. (1986)

Flash: George Perez covers this issue as well as the Firestorm backup. (1981)

Hulk: Another Marvel comic first: the first Hulk issue I purchased off the spinner rack. I was collecting comics for months before this, so I always wonder why it took me awhile to pick up a certain title. Was it the cover? Hulk punching Thing’s jaw loose? Something inside the book? Why this issue and not the one before it? That’s a Brett Blevins cover by the way. I was surprised by that myself. Also, if you follow all the Hulk covers to 300, you’ll see that the little Hulk in the upper left hand character box is going through a progressive change where he becomes more and more savage. A nice little touch to countdown his return to his rage state post-300. (1984)

Legion of Super-Heroes (1982)

Thor: From my uncle’s collection, this issue featured a conversation between Thor and Odin’s eye! Thor learns a secret about Asgard - that his Asgard wasn’t the first one! A cool issue leading up to, you guessed it, 300. (1980)

Uncanny X-Men: The Last Morlock story? I always thought Piotr’s brother Mikhail looked silly on this cover. Look at his face! (1992)

Wonder Woman (1982)

I don’t really care for the character, but this is all kinds of awesome.
