LSH ep.10: “the Substitutes”
What a clever, hilarious and just all around brilliant episode. The Legion holds auditions to bring in new members, winding up with Matter Eater Lad (from the Champions episode) and Star Boy (the Mark Waid/Barry Kitson “Threeboot” version). As they rush off to stop a threat, several rejected candidates come together as the (eventually named) Legion of Substitute Heroes! Chlorophyll Kid, Color Kid (who almost steals the show with his subtle but incredibly funny flamboyant nature), Stone Boy, Infectious Lass and their leader… Porcupine Pete! I was expecting Polar Boy but hey, I’ll take PP. They square off against Starfinger - who is a spoof of Mugatu in Zoolander? Or Balkie? Or… I don’t know what. When he does a split while showing off his powers I all but did one myself. The writers had so much fun in this episode and clearly threw bits out for older viewers. Perhaps the best example of this is a line of dialogue that lands after the Subs watch Starfinger boast and preen around the room. Color Kid, of all characters, states: “He’s a little dramatic don’t you think?”. Color Kid. Exceptional.
There are other cool moments including calling in the “reinforcements”: Element Lad, Sun Boy, Tyroc and Blok (one of my favs)! Later on in the episode you can see Colossal Boy and Shrinking Violet. During the auditions there were all sorts of cameos, most from characters that appeared before during the Lightning Storm episode: Antennae Boy, Night Girl, Invisible Kid, Double Header, Breath Boy, Fire Lad, Quake Kid, Polar Boy, and Polecat. Also, at the top of the ep, the Legionnaires sit at a tall dais with their names in front of them, much in the same way as the cover to their first appearance (although modernized and cartoonized). A nice touch.
This episode’s viewing came at the perfect time as well. I just finished listening to Episode 36 of the Super Future Friends Podcast which covers a story featuring the Subs! Nice timing!
Definitely one of my favorite episodes to date. Ten Finger Salute!
